Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the level of self-neglect and risk factors for self-neglect among older-old adults living alone in community so that evidence-based policies for social welfare would be suggested to intervene or prevent self-neglect. Data of face-to-face interviews with 672 older-old adults(+75) living alone older adults were drawn from a survey of ¡¸the living conditions of older adults living alone in Busan Metropolitan¡¹ City conducted in 2012 by the Busan Welfare Development Institute. Descriptive statistics were conducted to show the degrees of self-neglect and risk factors for self-neglect, and multiple regression analyses were used to identify significant risk factors for self-neglect. The results revealed 21.96% of the older-old adults living alone experienced, at least, one form of behaviors of elder self-neglect. Consistent with previous research, higher levels of economic hardship(¥â=.194, p<.001) and depressive symptoms(¥â=.309, p<.001) were significantly related with higher degree of self-neglect. Inconsistent with previous studies, the number of chronic diseases(¥â=-.120, p<.01) diagnosed at hospitals was negatively associated with the degree of self-neglect. Based on the results of this study, several policies for social welfare were discussed to intervene and prevent self-neglect among older-old adults living alone in South Korea
